Hunter,

My Ford p/u has a flat enough transmission hump to set the laptop on
next to the transfer case shifter.  This keeps it in the shade where I
can see it.  I just kind of angle it toward the driver's seat and one
corner of the screen tucks under the dash, and the opposite corner of
the keyboard fits under the seat.  It's usually dark enough down there
to see the map.

300 watt inverter from BJ's (member warehouse type outfit) was around
$40.00. I just plug the laptop shore power adapter into the inverter to
make 12 volts out of the 110 volts that I just got done making out of
the 12 volts.  That should filter out the wonky waveform and keep the
starter voltage drop from slamming the 'puter.
