I use 12v for lights (though I also have a propane light in the kitchen),
laptop computer, very small tv (occasionally), portable cb radio, and water
pump if the pressure gets really low and I've just started a shower (i.e.,
when I don't want to go outside to pump it up). I also have a portable
battery pack that I use in the field for my computer, along with another
small solar panel that keeps it charged. My portable printer has its own
battery pack, which can be charged directly with the small solar panel but I
don't print much when I'm on the road and haven't recharged it. I also carry
a small boat with an electric motor and another 12v battery that I charge
with the solar panel. I use NiMH batteries in my digital camera and have a
solar charger for those, too. I'm not sure my way is simpler (my friends all
call me the toy queen) - but it certainly suits my needs.
