If you have an Atwood heater, it has no anode rod at any rate so you would 
not compromise heater life. Anode rods are available aftermarket that will 
screw into the same hole as the drain plug but so are electric heating 
elements. Atwood HWH's have aluminum tanks and the entire tank slowly 
corrodes with age. The surface area is so large, the tanks may well last 
longer than the burner, valve, etc. Steel tank heaters (Suburban) need an 
anode rod to prevent rapid corrosion of dissimilar metals.

Electric heater kits are available from Camping World for a little under 
$100.00 and include a thermostat, etc., but then, even $100.00 will heat a 
lot of water with propane.
