Hi Martin,  I can't directly answer yes or no, but in my experience, even
the 600 rpm can be too fast when you are trying to keep the polishing
material wet on the Al while you buff.

I say this because I am removing paint (Latex over Zolotone) and the thinner
dries out quickly the faster I run the variable speed.  I've learned how to
find the happy medium between "active" removal and turning the slurry back
into a smeared version of the paint that was there.

I bought a 12volt cordless drill that is totally ideal for control of speed
and low rpm (max. 550) but I don't use it for the paint because it doesn't
spin fast enough for me to do "centripetal cleaning" of my bit cup-brush.

It isn't just a high rpm that can burn the metal, but also a heavy amount of
pressure with a lower rpm.  Anything that increases the friction will
increase the tempurature;  and if the polish medium no longer absorbs that
energy, then the aluminum and buff pad will---aluminum being a better
conductor.
