First suggestion would be to drive it for a bit over a moderately rough road ...
you want vibration rather than big bumps ... you might get lucky and break up
the caked chromate ... it's a long shot but worth a try.

Don't know about rebuilding absorption units (maybe someone else does) but they
can be replaced ... not cheap, but probably not so expensive as buying a new
fridge.  My local RV repair shop was doing that (replacing the absorption unit)
in a late 1980s Airstream motor home, when I took my furnace in there last week.
