Tricia/Conrad, Minwax makes a wood 
protectant (some such name).  A better
choice might be to consult a marine
supply store (e.g., West Marine).  I think
you would want a sealant, something that would penetrate the wood and
protect it
from moisture, rather than a finishing coat such as polyurethane.  No
definite knowledge; just my opinion.  Miss You.
