[a/s] Converter Questions

Now that the weather has warmed up some, I was able to look a little deeper
into the trailer we bought a few weeks ago.  It was back to the Airstream
factory for several updates and maint actions about 18 months ago. It is a
71 Tradewind.  One of the things replaced was the converter. The repair slip
just said installed new 50 amp converter. I checked it out today and it is a
Magnetek Series 900 model 950 ferro-resonant type of converter.  I have read
several articles about converters and the consensus was that normally  the
converters that come with units are not the best to properly maintain your
battery system. A good 3 stage battery charger would do a better job.  Does
anyone have an opinion of the ferroresonant type converter?  I am planning
on putting 2 6v golf cart batteries in it this spring and I want to be able
to keep them maintained properly without over charging etc...
