Pete,
I don't think every vehicle needs them either but, if you are throwing rocks
at the vehicle you are towing, you are also throwing them a lot farther.
Some people have insurance others get upset and some of those are stupid
enough to chase you down and shoot at you or commit other stupidities
against you. Glad you've never had a problem but, people get nastier every
day.
BTW: they pave some of the roads here in Arizona too but, the dirt ones lead
to more interesting places.
