Re: [VAL] Icky question
Check to see if it has any petroleum based solvents in it. If so,
you might want to try something else. Underwater photographers
deal with rubber O-rings on cameras and housings all the time, and
the manufacturers specify silcone grease for lubing them. Silcone
grease will not attack most kinds of plastics and rubber.
The purpose of the grease is not to make the seal, but rather allow
the ring to slide on the mating surfaces, rather than squirm and
bunch which would prevent a good seal from being made. You don't
need a lot, just an even thin coat. The ring should end up being
uniformly smooth and shiny.
