My thirty-two-year-old Dometic RM-60 still cools fine. However, the plating on the racks/shelves
has pitted and there are ugly rust spots here and there. Any suggestions???

Hi Lew,

Suggestions? Sure.

If it's just the plating that has gone away and the metal has surface rust:
clean off the rust as best you can with something like a Scotch-Brite pad.
Clean the surface and apply a product like the kind that Rustoleum sells
that changes 'rust' to a black type of reconstituted 'metal' that can then
be painted, etc. I don't see any reason why you couldn't use one of the
spray 'Chrome' paints from a known company such as Rustoleum, etc. The
chrome paint would of course be 'plastic chrome' but you will have stopped
the rust from getting worse or coming back at that location. And, the
'plastic chrome' should make those ancient shelves look good or nearly as
good as new.

How'd I do?

I am planning a cross country tour in my '68 Overlander from
Washington,DC to Los Angeles in 2004. I am turning my Overlander into an
art gallery for video/audio and installation work and touring it. I would
love to go to some Rallys. I want to start planning my itinerary now.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Does anyone know of similar projects or
grant info or promotional ideas? I am an art student and this is my
senior thesis. I would love any suggestions and or advice. Thanks in
advance!!!

One solution is to clean the up real good, buff them out so no rust is left
and then take them to a plater and have them re-plated. Look in the yellow
pages under metal finishers or plater's. Should run around 50 bucks to
have done, if you clean the up real good. Another solution is to buy a
product called tool dip. It comes in various colors and is used to
insulate tool handles. Again, clean the rack real good. Start by thinning
the tool dip a little. If you can find a disposable pan large enough to
hold the racks, you could pour the dip into the an and then dip the racks
and remove. Allow to drip and the hang to dry. It might take several
coats to cover all the way and get smooth but it will be durable and won't
rust unless the coating is cut. Tool dip cost around 10 bucks a can and I'd
get two or three cans. Tool dip also works great for sealing battery
terminals when they are new, sealing wire connections and loads of other
uses fro insulating or proving a cushion for noise reduction. JC Whiteny,
McMaster-Carr and a lot of auto parts houses sell it.

Rick,

If there was a line, I don't think unhitching would make you any friends.

For those traveling in southern Oregon, there is a lovely, little used,
free, weigh station on Hwy 62 (Crater Lake Highway) just north of Eagle
Point, on the southbound side.

We'd never weighed in before, so on we went. I have it written down in the
trailer's journal, but I think I remember it being 1850 front axle, 4500
rear axle, and 6450 on the trailer's tandems. Do the experts think these
numbers are about right, and well within safe limits?

Is there a list of other free weigh stations? Does it rate them for very
busy traffic or virtually none? We were pulled over in Eagle Point for at
least 5 minutes and noone else came--great!

Subject: [VAL] Battery Storage

The only plastic battery box I have found that will accomodate Trojan T105's is made
by Blue Seas and stocked by West Marine for sailboat applications. Unfortunately it
is a large box with the batteries oriented wide side-to wide side instead of narrow
side to side, making the box deeper than I would've liked for the trailer tongue -
almost more square than rectangular. I also found an outfit in Sacramento CA that
makes aluminum stuff ( http://www.taylorwings.com/ )
and battery boxes for 18-wheelers and they were more than willing to make up custom-sized
aluminum boxes to your spec for about the same money, compared to the stuff you find in
their web catalog. Summit Racing also sells individual aluminum battery boxes, but none
large enough for a Trojan 6Volt.

I haven't gotten to the point of implementing yet, and I have a spare tire to displace,
but I'm more inclined to have an aluminum battery box made and stay in keeping with the
older Airstream styling than to go plastic.

I've replaced the 12v batteries in my 88 25' excella (has 2 battery
boxes in
the front). I bought 2 T105s and they don' fit! tried to build a box
for
the tongue but not enough clearance between the trailer and the LP gas
bottles. Can you get larger battery boxes to replace the existing
ones?
Any creative solutions? Thanks!

You might consider having a shop sand blast and powder coat the racks. Re-chroming
might work too, but I've been told the results are often unsatisfactory. With powder
coating you could actually go with a color matching the interior of your fridge.

Subject: [VAL] Hard-to-find flare fitting

I'm looking for a flare fitting (for gas line):

tee, 5/8 x 3/8 x 3/8 (prefer the 5/8 to be on the run, but any
location OK)

I already have one of these, which I believe to be original, on our '73
Safari, so I know they are (were?) made. Need another as we add a
catalytic htr. but have been unable to find one in any hardware store,
any plumbing supply house (including the biggest one in Sacramento),
any RV store or any auto supply house. I know I can do it with various
adaptors but that involves "unnecessary" connections (= potential
leaks) and--perhaps more importantly--offends my sense of simplicity.

Anyone have such either a fitting they have salvaged and are willing to
sell or a source of supply to suggest?

TIA,

Rob

Rob,

Have you checked with the local gas company yet? They usually have
fittings, lights, etc that you can't find anywhere else.
