Any advice on what to use for replacement tail lights on '52 Cruisette
in the event that I can't track down an original set? Know of any
aftermarket product that may work?

Thanks! This is a great source of info.

Better read that page again. Better yet, go to the web site's FAQ page. It
isn't running from the vehicle's fuel tank, it's monuted to the vehicle's
engine. It's belt driven by the vehicle engine.

For the occasional use on a commercial service truck, its a workable
scheme, though I don't know where I'd find room under the hood of my
F150 to mount it.

That's the first problem, the others involve engine efficiency and
cooling. I doubt a 200+ hp engine idling fast with a 5 to 10 hp load
will operate efficiently. Most likely it will use a few gallons of
gasoline an hour compared to a gas engine matched to the generator that
might get by on less than 1 gallon per hour while supplying the same
load.

Then all that excess fuel will be converted to heat for the radiator to
dissipate without the slipstream of the vehicle in motion. Most likely
unless it has a very heavy duty cooling system (characteristic of the
heavy duty trucks, not vans or cars) the vehicle engine will overheat.

If the tow vehicle engine is diesel, it will handle the idling
efficiency and the heating a bit better, but would still not be an
appropriate power generation scheme for running all day.

Worse, no matter the engine, the waste heat from the very inefficient
vehicle engine would pollute the environs with heat for all but those
inside the air conditioned space, and I don't enjoy being heated more
than the weather for some one else's supposed comfort. The best of
engine driven generators will put 3 times the BTUs of heat to the local
atmosphere as supplied to the load, and the air conditioner will put a
great deal larger quantity of BTU as heat than it removes from the
conditioned space. The vehicle engine driven generator will likely put
more than ten times the BTU to the environment as waste heat than the
BTU delivered to the load.

Chris:

I don't know what type of tail lights your 1952 Cruisette now has,
if any, or it at one time had, if any. It's difficult to recommend a
replacement to either match or approximate the originals if we don't
know what was there originally. Are/were your taillights round or
rectangular? There might be shadow or mounting hole hints if they are
long gone.

If round, here's a single light that just ended on Ebay that
approximates the look of a round tail light I've seen only in photos on
a Cruisette. I don't know whether it is correct, but it looks similar.
I don't know whether it is a single or double filament bulb (and
apparently neither does the seller, or if he does, he ain't' saying).
See:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2232852094&category=1310

I don't know who made the light on Ebay; ask the seller for more info.

If your 1952 Cruisette original tail lights were rectangular Bargman
No. 2, then a new rectangular surface mount Peterson No. V306R dual
filament red pillow optic tail light would make a nice replacement until
you track down and restore an original set of Bargmans. A pair would
even be nice until you found some old round tail lights.

     Good luck!

The generator is making power from the engine of the truck, yes.

Between the lines: truck fuel makes power for generator which makes power
for ....

That was my point - no two types of fuel needed to have on hand - one tank -
the truck fuel tank - usually diesel - like mine.

You're missing an important point that Gerald made: You _have_ to run the
truck engine to make the generator work. Greater fuel use, greater noise,
less efficiency than a separate generator.

I know what Gerald said. Did you read what I wrote?

I made no mention of greater fuel use, greater noise, less efficiency or
whatever.

All I said was this: AC or AC/DC power can be supplied "from the same fuel
tank" or words to that effect. And that is a true statement - the truck
fuel tank creates power for the truck's engine and the truck's engine powers
up the onboard generator.

Hello,
I just finished installing a new black water tank in the 59 Traveler. I
purchased it through an RV dealer here in WI, an 8 gallon with a center
drain. I had to drill the 3 inch opening where I wanted it and glue in
the fitting for the drain but I got it in and working. It was $73, not
bad and very small to fit in those tight spaces. It was shipped from
Bell Industries.

Black water holding tank for 65 Caravel

After almost two years of rebuilding our 65 Caravel we finally got
down to the last problem, the release valve on the black water holding
tank. All it would take (we thought) was to drop some of the under belly
and replace the valve, then we planned on starting the polishing process
so we could join the rest of you at one of those rallies! When we
dropped the underbelly, lo and behold the entire bathoom floor was
rotted and the holding tank has three major cracks in it. After more
inspection I found that the entire toilet needs to go. My question is,
where do I find a holding tank that will fit in the small space
provided, or can I fix the existing holding tank with fiberglass?

Subject: [VAL] refrigerator access door

Hello all. This is a long shot, but wondered if anyone out there knew of
someone with a spare refrigerator access door from a 1969 23' Safari? We returned
from a recent camping trip to find ours had fallen off somewhere between
Evansville and Sullivan, IN!

Along that same line, do these access doors traditionally have locks on them?
Ours do not, and in our three years have never lost one so we never thought
about it. We're thinking now this would be a wise investment.

We're looking on Ebay. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in
advance!

Subject: [VAL] Black Water Holding Tank --65 Caravel

I just purchased a 1965 Caravel and plan to totally reconfigure it. The plan
would call for relocating the head to the side street gaucho position,
replace the existing head with a dinette, and a dinette in the front. Yes, 2
dinettes. One would be used as an office while food is served up front, to
seat more if it is raining, and to have a bed available all of the time. The
main motivation is to increase the number of sleeping positions. The plan
allows for sleeping 2 each fore and aft, and one lucky guy on the floor!
The head configuration would be similar to the Bambi toilet/ shower combo.
I am mocking up the toilet/ shower before I tear into the reconfigure
project. If I do go ahead I would have available for sale: toilet,
blackwater, shower-lavatory fiberglass module, stove and gauchos. Let me
know if you or anyone else is interested in the parts.
Best regards, Joel

I'm not sure about the size and characteristics of your missing door,
but I recently discovered that many older (junked) computer cases were
made of good aluminum and had vents (louvers) on two sides for cooling.
I plan to cut one up to use as a vent for my refrigerator cooling.
Cheaper and better looking that any I saw in the catalogs - I'll cut it
to the size I need. Maybe get the local sheet metal/plumbing guys to do
a finish bend to the perimeter.
