Tuesday at 9 on the Travel Channel, John Ratzenberger (from Cheers) is hosting the
episode of Made in America from the Airstream plant in Jackson Center. Just an FYI.

Subject: [VAL] Propane light help needed

    All,

I have a propane light (mantle type) that has me puzzled. It's one I've
seen in images of other Airstreams (brown in color) and in the case of the
1969 Caravel is located just inside the door on the left, attached to the
side of the upper locker over the Dometic. This light has never been fitted
to my trailer and I'd like to put it there.

My dilemma is that there are four mounting feet as a part of the rear
casting. They are 1/8" in diameter and NOT tapped with threads. In
addition, they protrude from the back of the decorative sides by 1/4" such
that the actual aluminum light housing would stand off the bulkhead by 1/4"
if mounted using these feet.

    1. Are there missing parts for the back necessary to attach it to the
bulkhead?
    2. Are the mantles that attach to the ceramic base the standard ones
available at any sporting goods store?
    3. Is the round, half frosted glass lens still available?
    4. I've seen both squished cylindrical ones as well as flat sided ones
round ones. Which were appropriate for 1969?

As always, thanks in advance for your collective help,

    Glyn Judson

hello glyn
my trailer did not have a propane lantern but i recently purchased one for
installation just above my frig. i cannot answer most of your questions but
it may be a humphreys. these propane lanterns were used in many campers and
they have not changed much in design over the last 35 years. i purchased
mine at the below referenced web site.
http://www.gasproductscompany.com/Gas_Lights/Humphrey/maybe it can help you
out with its pictures and diagrams mantles and globes. i do know that the
humphreys can use the standard coleman mantles. good luck

I have one of these in my '71 Safari.

How do you use it? Is it safe to use?

I had one in my 1970 but I took it out. I replaced the mantle many
times
and about every time I went down the road it would break..
I replaced the light with a nice 12V light of the same type used in
the newer units.
It was Just Not Worth It.

hi tim
if yours is a humphrey, it is very easy to use. just like a coleman propane
lantern with a cloth mantle. there should be a lever on the side, up for
off, down for on or vice versa. you light a match and turn it on and
presto..... you have light and a minimal amount of heat. as to safety, i
would treat it as i would any appliance that combusts, always crack a window
or vent. also, i messed up the address for where i got mine lantern. it
should be http://www.gasproductscompany.com/Gas_Lights/Humphrey/

Thanks to all of you for the info . I clipped a little out of some of your
replies ,and put my thoughts in betwwen each .

thanks Gerald J , My Dad had a stack of fine homebuilding , I `ll go thru
them next time I`m at the farm . He did some work at a furniture shop in his
later years and was quite good at veneering . One more case of I should have
payed more attention while I could ....

I guess my $.02 would be to use veneer if you want to keep the trailer
intact and replace the doors. I would also recommend that you consider
using 1/8" plywood over any large panels vice thin veneer to prevent
buckling and separation. Be ready for a big job if you rebuild, but it does

give you some flexibility. By the way, if you rebuild you will need some
good tools - always a good thing!
Good luck

I guess I may end up rebuiding them ,maybe one at atime , I`m anxious to get
the thing together again . I gotta have another operation ,and when I get
back on my feet , no grass is going to grow under my wheels . I may bond
some toothpaste colored formica to the bulkhead by the sink ,the worst of it
, and call it good for now . The reason I was thinking veneer is that I
think the face of the cabinet will be destroyed by removing the bulkhead ,
making total replacement neccessary .Which isnt the end of the world , they
will be pretty simple to rebuild using the old as patterns . Not exactly
fine joinery in these airstreams - and I already have those tools !

I personaly would descourage any one from reveneering your trailed it is a
hell of a lot of work with many pitfalls.eaiser to replace with furniture
grade
plywood.

I will heed your advise , Jim . I did look at the pictures of your trailer
again on Daisy Pickermans web page , its a beautifull thing you have created
. Keep working on it , I would`nt want to see you hanging around the pool
hall !
thanks again everyone .
