It always happens on a weekend. I want everyone to
get back on track and right away.

It seems that the WBCCI is always a hot topic, and to
be honest, it never really results in much more than
conversation. After all the talking, there are still
just a handful of us that make all this possible for
all of you.

Please respect that; it's our gift to all of you and
it's never nice to have it thrown back in our face.

Let's get back to being gracious to one another - only
4 (5?) more weeks of winter left, then we can all hook
up the trailers and get some wind in the sails.

Subject: RE: [VAL] Back on Topic - Mirrors

Greetings Bill!

I have my '75 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible setup for towing, and have
McKesh Mirrors that are the same Vintage as my Minuet. You will most
likely find as I did that the brackets on your McKesh Mirrors won't
allow firm enough attachment on the front fenders (the fender mounting
method didn't work for my Cadillac nor the Suburban) - - I have found
that mine work best when mounted on the door as close to the regular
rearview mirrors as possible. This mounting position works at least as
well as the factory towing mirrors that I had on my GMC Van as well as
those that were on my Chevrolet pickup.

If your McKesh Mirrors haven't been used for awhile, you might want to
consider ordering a set of new straps and a pad kit that will replace
the components that touch the car's finish - - I did this with both sets
of my McKesh Mirrors (I have two sets - - Vintage Chrome McKesh Mirrors
for the Cadillac and Charcoal Powder Coated McKesh Mirrors for the
Suburban) - - the parts kits are quite reasonable direct from the
manufacturer.

You can see a photo of my Cadillac with the Overlander and its set of
McKesh Mirrors at:

http://www.airstreamphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=2848&password=
&sort=1&cat=998&page=2

I contacted Hensley Manufacturing for the parts kit via their web site
at:

http://www.hensleymfg.com/mckeshmirrors.html

Since the photo was take, I have added the convex spotting mirrors to
both sets of my McKesh Mirrors - - they really make towing with the car
feel much more secure.

Here are the links to the Hitch Spotter HookUp Mirror that I use with
both my Suburban and Cadillac - - It mounts magnetically to the
trailer's hitch:

http://www.trailer-hitch.com/hspotter.jeo?refid=17

If I only had one trailer, I would purchase the OneShot mirror at the
link below. It has a much better view and is less likely to be impacted
by wind and other weather conditions while hooking up since it is
permanently mounted to the hitch with a clamp mechanism:

http://www.bartswatersports.com/catalog.asp?P=4016

Good luck with your towing setup!

For those of you who tow with a car. I have a mirror question, what do
you do for extension mirrors. Where do you mount them on the door or on

the front fender? I have a set of McKesh mirrors which came with our
trailer, but I have not needed them on the Powerwagon since it has Jr.
West Coast mirrors which have an overall width of 102". On the Lincoln,

should I mount them on the fenders or the doors? They seem too long to
fit on the fenders and the doors seem to close to the driver to see
properly. Any suggestions?

Also, does anyone have a source for a mirror to mount on the trailer
jack to facilitate hookup. I have a mirror to mount on the truck
tailgate to facilitate one person hookup, but there is no tailgateon the

Lincoln to attach to.

I think the serial you gave earlier shows it was a 1980 model. One more
year until "vintage" I'm afraid.

Who'd of ever thought a 1980 Airstream would be vintage, huh. Shoot,
they look just like the new ones still...

it

a 76 1/2... remember when they used to do that (still do?) with

Chas, the vin plate gives a date of manufature of July 24, 1979, the
title
lists it as 1980 medel. Clarification for eligibility for VAC membership

Chris,

Whatever light colored wood you decide on you need to keep one thing in
mind - *before* you stain, pickle or whatever be sure to seal the wood
FIRST. This will stop the wood from absorbing too much stain in areas that
will look blotchy later. If you've ever seen interior wood trim on a house
that was left natural and it's splotchy with light and darker areas that is
the reason - failure to apply a sealer - first.

It may not have the 300+ horsepower of today's motors but I'm sure it has
plenty of torque.
I bet it would pull a Bambi and would look good too! Even if it is a Ford.

hi chris
from your description, your interior veneers and finish are like mine. (66
safari) i too believe the veneers are ash. i went to several hardwood stores
and found ash plywood (mdf) but the grain pattern of the new stuff was much
straighter and not nearly as wild as the existing trailer veneers. i have
found that some white oak veneers are closer to the grain structure. oak and
ash are very much alike. as to matching the stain, thats much tougher. i
tried a number of times to get it close and never did make it. i later
decided to use a furniture refinisher fluid and remove some of the existing
finish. i then applied a golden oak stain with a poly finish coat. its a
touch darker and a little more golden but now all the surfaces look
consistent be they old or new replacements. depends on how much of a
accurate restoration you are looking for. good luck
harry

Subject: Re: [VAL] For Sale

Hi All,

Went to see this trailer on Saturday. Owner are nice people. The inside is in good
shape. Front groucho needs to be repaired some. Has been sitting for 8 years so how
well the stove, heat, fridge, and everything else is questionable. They look to be in
good shape. Has two gas lights. Didn't find any give away leaks or real soft spots.
Has two carpets on it. Tires are shot was sitting on the axles with the tongue in the
dirt. Front gas ling need some work as it look crushed into the ground. Two big concern
is what kept us from making an offer.

First where the step is all rusted. Step needs to be replace and welded up. When you
pull the step out you get to see some of the frame behind it. In one spot it was rusted
almost completely out. Only the top inch was still connected.

The back bathroom was also a big concern. With the trailer bottomed out and tongue stuck
in the mud it should move much. I was able to make the back end bounce. While the front
and middle didn't move really. Under the back end what I could see show some type of cover
other than alumni, as it rusted off. Was worried the back end need to have the frame rebuilt.

Bumper needs to be replace.

Rear window needs glass to be replaced as it's been gone for awhile. She did tape plastic
up but this was done from the inside. Have concern that water has been running down the
window onto the frame.

Current owners are nice people. Didn't want to insult them with an offer that I knew would
have to be very low because of the unknowns. Those who aren't afraid of replacing the
frame or at least shoring it up this would mostly likely be a good trailer.

This is just some things I remember. Only spent 30 minutes looking it over once the frame
concerns came up we wrote it off. Plus I couldn't get under it.

Take care,
Chris

This is a topic that has come up repeatedly in the existance of the two a/s lists.
Unfortunately, it seems to be the
most polarizing issue presented on them - each time the discussion has degenerated
quickly into personal
attacks, moderators kicking members off lists, etc. Clearly this is a serious problem,
and members have a lot of
emotion tied up in it, but it would seem little progress has been made in solving it.
Is there not some way we can
have a more civilized - and more effective - discussion?

Permit me to apply my professional skills with some timely observations. Wife and I
have been WBCCI
members for about five years now, but only this past weekend did we "attend" our first
WBCCI rally, quite
unintentionally. For the past month we have been parked in a quiet and pleasant
little campground, visiting my
declining 95 year old mother each day. But this weekend a local unit rally moved
from its intended site to this
campground when the original site was flooded out. Suddenly we were in the middle
of the rally.

What happened? Well, despite our rather obvious classic coach and Airstream-labelled
clothing, only one
attendee ever spoke to us - in the laundry room, and in response to our asking where
they were from. In all
fairness, the gentleman did tell us to drop in anytime, but it was a pro forma
invitation - we did not feel welcome.
The attendees seemed unaware of anyone else - they did not pick up their dogs' feces,
they were loud, they
stayed up late, they repeatedly left all the lights on, etc. They closeted themselves
in the group room, where their
only activities seemed to have been eating high-calorie meals and playing parlor games.
They used their Sunday
morning to leave early (and loudly again).

Is the WBBCI a place where Airstream enthusiasts gather together and meet -- or is
simply small exclusive,
private groups who get together who just happen to own Airstreams.

Is this the way to attract new members or revitalize the organization? On this list
I will have to permit your to draw
your own conclusions. However, the answers are important to me, so can I suggest that
those who are interested
engage in an off-list correspondance?

Hi David,

Go here:

http://www.wbcci.org/regions.html

I should also tell you that some of us who have Vintage trailers like to
hang out and caravan with others as nutty as we are. In Region 2, there
is the Washington DC unit. None of the members actually live in DC,
although the founder, Tom Howarth, used to. A lot of us have Vintage
trailers, and we have members all over the country. If you look at the
last Vintage Advantage you will see a write-up done by yours truly about
the Wagon Wheels caravan we had to the VT International. That might give
you an idea of us.

We always have campfires, and spend as much time talking about our tools
, trailers, pullers and food as we can.

We try to keep things simple. The club's policy is that any Airstream RV
that is at least 25 years old makes its owner eligible for membership
(assuming concurrent membership in WBCCI). We do not care what day of the
year it was made, just the year of manufacture. 2004 minus 25 gives us 1979.
So any Airstream RV manufactured in 1979 is OK for membership as of January
1st 2004. And even if you happen to apply a couple of months early you will
not be turned away.

Personally, I have garnered some great information from this list in the past
year or so. I am a WBCCI member with a token trailer and another brand of
motor home. Some of the best friends I have in the world came via the WBCCI.
My wife is an officer of our local unit. (The above is background)
In the past couple of years, I have been involved with more than one meeting
regarding recruiting and retaining new members for the WBCCI. I don't think
that there is or ever will be a quick and easy answer. The bottow line is that
attrition and evolution will change it. For the most part, a lot of our
members live in the past and by no fault of their own, just don't understand the
younger generation.
I personally think that if the Blue Beret had allowed editorial comment over
the past years, this issue would be much closer to solution than it is. The
Club has it's place as a rally point for those of common interest, it is not
however a religion as some appear to feel.
In part the WBCCI is one of Thor's best marketing tools. Other major brands
have tried it and not succeeded to the extent that Thor has developed it.
Nothing is prettier than meeting a caravan on Route 66. It will always make
my heart beat a little faster.
Nothing is uglier than a rally that I once attended where a 94 year old
member was not welcome because her children showed up in another brand.

I feel sure that the WBCCI will survive and prosper but the future is sure to
be quite different from the past.........and such is all of life.

Guys,

I have been informed by Doug Rowbottom (furniture person) whose training
included recognising wood species, that my 57 Bubble is elm. Looks much
like ash, but IIRC the tiny herringbone sub grain is a characteristic of
elm but missing in ash. Doug did say that hardly anyone would recognise
the difference unless it was pointed out side by side.

I'm almost 2000 (road) miles from the Bubble now but will try to get
some digital shots when I'm back in NM the end of the week and post on
my webshots space. I have no way of knowing of elm was still available
in '63.

I've not been looking for elm veneer, but there were quite a few elm in
the USA into the 70s. Doing a bit of internet research on Dutch Elm
Disease, Alberta claims to be virtually or completely free of the
disease yet. They don't appreciate others hauling fire wood cut from
sick elm trees into the province.

As I recall, the big loss of elm in Iowa was in the 70s, so that it
could have been relatively common in the 60s. I recall also that those
who chose the split large elm logs into firewood chunks by hand soon
developed large muscles or large piles of unsplit logs and an expanded
drill sergeant's vocabulary.

I don't recall elm as being prized as a finish wood, so modern veneers
may not exist. My dad used oak plywood in restoring damaged drawer
fronts and panels in my '68 Caravel.

Perhaps the reason some can be gracious is that they hooked up their trailers and headed

Bobby,

Watch that language, there is nothing wrong with a Ford. The truck
should be able to pull a Bambi without a problem. The only weak point
might be the frame. Look at the VAC rally pictures for the Duncan Mills

Daisy,

I saw your article, very nice.

One of the problems I have, and I will rely in survey comments, is that
for a new member, I could not find any summary of any unit objective.
In Southern California, I have my choice of several units, but I could
not determine any geographical area or objective. I appears that either
the Southern California, Long Beach, Golden West, El Camino Real
(formerly San Bernardino), San Diego, San Fernando, South Coast or maybe
Tri County units are in my area and why should I join one over the
other, what are their interests and objectives? After attending the VAC
rally in Santa Maria in 2002, we joined the El Camino Real Unit
(formerly San Bernardino). They have a number of vintage owners, former
officers in VAC and current Region representative.

We have not been on a rally since, but we are attending the El Camino
Real rally in Las Vegas in April.

Thanks Kevin,

I will replace the pads and straps, I would hate to lose a mirror or
damage the car. I will also look for the back up mirrors you

the mirror attachments appear too long.

Do you plan to use a polyuerethane coat? If so, you need to read this
first.

Any good brand like Min-Wax, Behr, etc. make excellent products. This url
tells you what the sanding sealer does and what to avoid.

Chris ,
It has a flat head Mercury v8 and a three speed manual Trans. and
Im sure a high ratio rear end sounds good but im sure it wouldnt last
long . Flat head fords were noted for sand in the water jackets and
heating up , The tclutch is probably light duty and Im sure the rear end
would probably give you a 55 mph max at ??????rpms.
Late model v8 Trans and rear end and now your talking.

Hello,
I have a set that mount to the front fenders on my 75 Travelall over the
wheel. They work well enough to feel comfortable pulling my 68
Sovereign. I posted a request for those old mirrors that "My dad used to
have" and as always, a VACer came to my rescue! Someone has an old set
in their basement or garage and will be willing to "clear them out, just
ask.

I've used this type of mirror before. I had mounted
them centered over the front wheels. Located at this
position I found them to be quite useful.

OK, I will ask. Does anyone have a set of the old mirrors which were
used on cars, when you used a car to tow a trailer?

My parents had a early 70's Airstream which they towed with a mid 70's
Grand Marquis. But that was many years ago and now that they are gone,
I have no idea what happened to the mirrors.
