Re: [VACList] Replacing windows in a 1968

Hi Jim:

Yes, the '67 windows are indeed different than the '68s. One of the
differences is that the aluminum extrusion at the top of the pane is bonded
onto the glass in '67. In '68 the glass is clamped between 2 extrusions.

Another is that in '68 there are only 2 "grabber" mechanisms on the wider
windows including the ones fore and aft. In '67 there were 3. When you
crank in a window with 3 grabbers you can't crank all three at once. This
is when you see how flexible the glass really is. It bends quite a bit as
you go from grabber to grabber.

When they went to less grabbers in '68, it looks like they added the trim
pieces to compensate for the missing grabber and to generally stiffen the
pane.

Try to look at it this way, if they were less flexible they wouldn't flap
in the breeze so easily and ultimately break off at the fixed hinge point at
the top.

How true. But once you have Lexan installed you don't ever have to worry
about breaking THAT window again.
