[VAC] Re: Vintage tow vehicle (1972); Which Airstream?
Jack,
I would think you should be able to tow anything up to the 31'. I have a
friend that just got back from an Atlanta/Colorado Rocky Mtn trip with a 65
Merc Colony Park wagon (390 engine without factory tow pkg) and he said it
did quite well. My 77 Excella owners manual has some multiplier factor to
determine engine requirement in 77 and factors out to a 400 ci engine to pull
the estimated 7000 lb wt of a loaded out Excella (dry wt of trailer is 5880).
Older or non-Excella 31' units should weigh in a little lower, plus the
towing equipped Camper Special is probably better geared for towing, so I
would not worry about the fact that the 390 is a little less than 400 ci. It
is also from a non-polution device equipped vehicle with better horsepower
ratings than a similarly equipped 77 model as expected when using the
multiplier factor in the equation.
Sorry I cannot furnish the equation, but it is in the Airstream and I do not
have immediate access to it.
