 Roger: I investigated the MB 320/430 before buying my Durango. The MB has about a 5000# tow capacity (vs 7400#'s for the Durango, 5.9 V8, 3.92 axle), but with the small displacement V6, I think that's overstated. Also the 430 has the same tow rating,which means it's geared for speed, not towing. Tell your wife that it won't work (although it would probably work in a pinch, but would probably create problems later-ever serviced a broken MB?-big bucks, especially out in the boonies). The American made trucks/SUV's (including Toyota Tundra and other 4.7 ltr V8 Tundra based SUV's) are the best for towing- Big, strong, and relatively cheap to maintain/repair, and with high resale value. My last servicing for my '99 Durango (which has been trouble free, even after a 2500 mile tow of my '66 Overlander to CA and back) was only $500 for tuneup and all fluids/axles changed. My '97 Chevy 2500 p/u with 7.4 ltr V8 has cost less than $200 over that past 4 years to maintain. Changing the wipers would probably cost that on the MB. When it comes to trucks, American made still are the best. 
The MB is an AWD car ( and an outstanding one at that), not really a truck based SUV.
