Hi Roger,
According to the 1966 membership directory for the WBCCI
Number 179 was owned by Arman & Blanch Dolde of El Monte, California.
You may be able to trace the previous owner. However even if Wally had owned
the  trailer  His Number was always No. 1, so 179 could have been his
friends numbers and would be consistent with the Model year 1954. In either
case the club now reserves all 3 digit numbers for Airstream company and
WBCCI Executives and Officers.
No Exceptions.
We have an original 1956 Caravanner with No 217 which is consistent with
1956 registration. The number is not currently in use but due to the
regulations we were not allowed to keep this number.
Your problem with the finish on your trailer sounds like someone spent the
money to have it clear coated in the 60's when that process became popular.
If  the finish is flaking you will have to strip it off and either polish or
recoat.
