DIY’s “Classic Rides” to Feature an American Icon –

A 1970 Airstream “Overlander” Land Yacht Trailer.

The second series of DIY’s “Classic Rides” will feature the restoration of an American icon: an Airstream “Land Yacht” trailer. Producers have purchased a 1970 27-foot Airstream “Overlander” to be restored during the series (possibly 13 episodes).

The series will be produced by RIVR Media, producers of “DIY’s Classic Car Restoration”, and taped at their studios in Knoxville, Tennessee. Production runs from November 2004 through January 2005. “Classic Rides” premiered on the DIY television network on October 2, 2004, with the first 9-episode series featuring the restoration of another American icon: a 1965 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide motorcycle. The show airs at 10 a.m. on Saturdays and again on Fridays at 9:30 pm and 12:30 am.

The series will also feature the rich history of the Airstream company, from it’s birth in the 1930’s by founder and innovator Wally Byam, through the post WW II travel boom, into the Baby Boom of the 1960’s… to the vintage revival of present day. Producers are looking forward to participation from Airstream Inc., Airstream travel clubs and organizations, travel & automotive museums, as well as restoration experts and parts suppliers.

"Classic Rides" is a hands-on, back-to-the-basics celebration of America's love affair with “rides” of all types and sizes – from classic motorcycles to exciting scooters; from vintage trailers to restored tractors. The weekly half-hour series offers restoration tips, maintenance projects and step-by-step reconstruction, ranging from interior refurbishment to exterior restoration. The show is hosted by restoration expert Kevin Tetz and often features guest experts, including specialists, authors and demonstrators.

Step-by-step instruction and information about suppliers and resources can be found on the DIY website: www.diynet.com. An example of the DIY website resources for the “Classic Car Restoration” Corvette series can be seen at: http://staging2.diynet.com/DIY/resource/0,2013,48974,FF.html (products and materials supplied to the show) or http://staging2.diynet.com/DIY/resource/0,2013,48973,FF.html (clubs and organizations).

Host Kevin Tetz (“Tates”) is a certified member of ICAR (International Center for Automotive Research) and ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence). Kevin is also a member of SEMA, the Specialty Equipment Market Association, a major automotive parts and accessory trade organization. In 1999 Kevin started Paintucation.com, a website that offers video instruction and advice for paint and bodywork projects and general restoration work. He also writes for several publications, including Mustang & Fords magazine, and participates in numerous automotive shows, offering how-to clinics and seminars to hobbyists and professionals alike.

Text Box: Airstream
(from www.airstream.com)
As a testament to Airstream’s long tradition of design and manufacturing excellence, Airstreams can be found in both the Smithsonian Institution and Henry Ford Museum. NASA selected an Airstream trailer to house the first astronauts back from the moon and still uses Airstream motorhomes as an integral part of the space shuttle program. As another example, John F. Kennedy chose an Airstream as his mobile presidential office.
Today, Airstreams can be found in the lobby of MTV, on movie sets, and on display at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Airstream’s appeal is as strong as ever. The Wally Byam Caravan Club International (WBCCI) is 10,000 member-strong and holds nearly 1,500 rallies annually. Airstreams are regularly seen in movies and on television. They can be found at Airstream-only campgrounds, used as traveling medical facilities, and of course, cruising into the sunset.
Over 60% of all Airstreams ever built — including some built from the original five-dollar plans — are still rolling down the highways. Airstreams have survived millions of miles across some of the roughest roads in the world and Airstreamers have enjoyed the freedom to go where others only dream of traveling.
Airstreams are truly an American legend.
