Onan Backfires

My Onan generator backfires a few seconds after I shut it off. This is very disturbing to us and to other campers around us. I have taken it in to Onan for service with no help other than a bill. I have also followed their advise and installed a new muffler and tail pipe. Still backfires. During shut off my carbureted CCK 5 Onan opens the throttle. My thinking is a rich carb or faulty governor. I was hoping the Onan tech could dial these in but at this point I am not sure of the best way to proceed.
The thread for Onan is at WWW.funroads.com/forums

I was having problems with my Onan which was turning over, but not firing. Turns out to have been a faulty relay, and it can be started by turning it to manual rather than electric start. The Onan tech is looking for a new relay, and I should be seeing him this weekend. I will raise the question about your generator with him. I think we probably have the same model.

Hi All
Just an update on the generator problem. While I was decarboning the generator today I discovered to my surprise it was running quite lean. Choking the carburetor heavily caused it to run much better. I suspect this lean mix is causing the exhaust manifold to get extra hot and may be what is causing the back firing problem.

Tom how about running this by your Onan tech to see if it is possible.

The mixture screw is hard to reach on my installation and I will have to fabricate an adjustment tool. I do not know why the Onan tech was unable to find and adjust this when I had it in to him. Even though I indicated I thought it was a fuel mixture problem.
I ran the generator with the choke 3/4 blocked on for quite a while today. The engine ran much better and did not backfire when I turned it off. So I hope I am on the right track.
Mike

Hi Jerry,
We have three chapters of the Royal Rovers here in Texas. Houston, Alamo based in San Antonio, and Lone Star out of Dallas. Houston holds all of their rallies at Coushatte RV Ranch outside of Bellville, Alamo moves around in the general San Antonio area, while Lone Star does the same in the more northern part of Texas. They are scheduled to hold a rally in June in Waco.

Where in Texas are you located?

Just a final on the generator problem. The thing has not backfired once since resetting the fuel mixture last year.
