Silver Streak name plate

Silver Streak Message Board: Message Board Postings: Silver Streak name plate
By Jim Bailar on Tuesday, April 17, 2001 - 10:28 pm:

In the process of restoring my '66' model I was preplexed as to why my nameplates were missing on both front and rear of my 17 footer. The screws were in place, but no nameplates.
Turns out these plates were made of plastic and apparently were not of the UV resistant veriaty. Im assuming mine just decomposed out from under the existing stainless screws. For a time I felt some other restorer robbed my craft to up-grade his project but I feel the first reasoning is more sound.
So what does one do to replace this flowing script that sets us apart from the multitude of streamers out there and redefine our nobal existance??
After much looking and finding NOTHING to replace the origenal script and make use of the protuding screw heads and holes... I recreated my own!
I was able to trace the emprint from the old script (etched in my anodized finish) and come up with a patern that I transfered to .125 aluminum plate. I proceded to skillfully cut two plates screwed togeather out on a band saw and clean up with fine files to remake these beauties. I went a step further and had them Gold anodized to match the Silver Streak trim of our mark.
They really turned out nice and just add the finishing touch to a fine project.

To end... I am considering reproducing in quantity if I can get the feeling there if a viable market out there for such book ends.
Your thoughts on this are appreciated.

PS. I was able to find a reproduced decal through a sorce in Texas, but they were about 3' long and overall bigger then my trailer was produced with... so I opted for the smaller (about 4 X 22") recreation, and glad I did. JB

Curiosity prompts me to ask. What would a set of these reproductions cost?

By Micheal Igou on Tuesday, April 24, 2001 - 05:25 pm:

Jim, I own a 1966 19' Silver Streak Sabre that does not have the flowing Silver Streak nameplates either. I am very interested in obtaining two of these nameplates from you. Please E-mail(Igoums@AOL.com) me with the details. Thanks Mike

i would like to find out how much the name plates would cost. we have a 1965 sabre. my husband had some decals made but we really don't want to put them on

Hello Fellow Streakers! I am the proud owner of a 1965 26' "streak". I would be very interested in the name plates as mine have disappeared as yours. Does anyone have a source for the large name label on the front? Mine is still there but it is faded and on "life support" as we speak.

I'm so thrilled to have this trailer (fell into it and got a great deal) I'm sure I'll keep her forever! Boy do I get the looks hauling it behind the dodge! What fun.

For Twist Locks:

Unfortunately Isley's is now out of business, a great parts house that will be missed, to be sure!

I just ordered and installed two new Twist Lock seals and bodies, however, I found that Apache RV in Apache Junction, AZ. was able to order them for me within a few days. I am very happy with the new ones. These twist locks seem to have a field life of about 5 years or so. I think I will order two more for extras, as I am sure that eventually they will not be available anymore, like all things! The ones they got for me, are the exact duplicate of the original Silver Streak factory install.

I also need the name replacement for my 1967 silverstrek front and back.

I just came by a 17 foot Silver 1965, and the nameplates are gone, front, and back. I thought of tracing the outlines, and making something. It would be nice to find original plates, but plastic gets crackley. Too bad the nameplates don't light up from behind, like neon, or a glowstick.

By b_spores on Sunday, August 03, 2003 - 12:34 am:

jondolin,
we had a 1965 17 1/2 ft silver streak sabre. ansd sold it to close friends because we bought a 68 silver streak 27 ft which we love but also loved our 65 sabre. it had both name plates when we bought it, they were made out of a rubber like plastic, my husband took them off because th were so brittle. anyway we kept them and gave them to our friends who bought the trailer. he has a lot of machines to work on metalso he is going to copy them for his trailer, i talked to bob ashby in texas who knows almost everything about silver streaks and he told me that every year the lettering changed on silver streaks. i think it would be wonderful to have neon nameplates.
i know your going to love your little trailer.

By Jandolin Marks on Tuesday, September 09, 2003 - 11:40 am:

Thanks, Barb ! I suppose we could each trace the outline of the lettering, and custom our own plates. With the originals falling apart, I see no reason why we can't make metal ones, or wood, or a UV ray protected resin. I am partial to a Gold color, or red. The little trailer attracts a lot of attention. We call it a Strongbox!

Hi Folks,

Several things.
1.)My '65 Streamline trailer had a type of plastic logo on both front and back. Over the years they became brittle and cracked too. I tried a number of places to have some cast out of aluminum, without a whole lot of success. Finally, I did find a shop here in Houston, who was able to duplicate them out of cast aluminum. They just took more care, and were able to do what other shops had not been able to do. I painted them first with a primer, because I was told that there would be significant out-gassing from the new ones, and followed that up with paint from a model hobby shop. The results were very impressive, and I was more than satisfied. This may be the way to go with your logos too.
2.)It is brand new, but I have now started up a mailing list for Silver Streaks on the site. If I get enough action, I will start archiving the postings on the site too. You are welcome, and indeed invited to join up. To find out more, go to the main Silver Streak mailing list page at:

I too need a nameplate! I see a business forming right in front of my eyes! TOM, please contact me as I would like to purchase as well as discuss distributing. Thank you and I need these ASAP!

By Tom Patterson on Tuesday, April 26, 2005 - 03:35 am:

All you need to do is find an aluminum casting business in your locale, and bring them one of the old ones to duplicate. I don't have any Silver Steak logos to duplicate, so you will have to find someone that does.

The logo that I had made was for a Streamline trailer.

Working on name plates too...here's the long story. I just sold a 1964 Airstream Bambi II that was in pretty awesome orig condition. I had it for about 4 yrs and enjoyed it immensely but needed something bigger for my growing family. I've got two boys now...9 mo and 2 1/2, wife and a dog. So, I sold Bambi II and was looking for a mid to late 70's 23 or 25 ft Airstream in nice shape. I found some and was on the verge of travelling great distances for the right one. Then things changed..a friend from my native PA that comes to town occasionally reminded me that he knew of a Silver Streak trailer nearby that was available. So, we went to the owners home one evening and checked it out. I had not considered a SS since I was an AS enthusiast, but one look at the SS and I realized that it was a better made trailer, not to mention thsione was in pretty awesome condition. It seems everything in this thing is orig. The woman that had it was in her 70's and her husband had passed away 7 yrs prior. That had it for about 15 - 20 yrs and used it only as guest quarters in the back yard. I brought my wife and kids then that weekend to have a look. My wife was not sold since I'm short on available time and it does need some TLC but I was iinto it. I asked how much she wanted and she told me that she had wanted 5K for it before but was told some time ago that it was only worth 4K and that she guesses that she'd take 3K for it. Well, I didn't know what it was truly worth, but I figured it was worth 3 anyway, but being me, I offered her 2K on the spot and she accepted. I hooked it up and the lights all worked, the brakes worked and I drove it home. Now it gets good. I was getting the Airstream ready to deliver it to the buyer and I thought I'd include the blue waste water tank that was stored in the SS's trunk in back. Getting the blue tank out though, I had to move things around a bit and there was a little tin box kinda wedged in there and I had to move that first. When I did , I tossed it to the side. It then opened slightly to reveal a small white envelope. I ignored it but then something said "what's in the envelope"...uh, FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS was in the envelope. 2K in 100's and 2K in 50's. A bit stunned, Ifirst thought I've gotta give this back. I told a dozen or more people about it at work and friends and they told people and I got so many opinions but the majority of responses was "keep the money". Even those who I was sure would tell me to return it said to keep it. I thought it over for one week and decided that telling her was the right thing to do. I called her up and told her that I had found something in the SS that I thought she might be interested in. My wife and I drove to her house that evening and I told her that I really considered keeping what I had found but that I wanted to give it to her and let her decide what to do with it. When she looked in the box, she couldn't imagine where the money could have come from. We only figure that it was a safe keeping that her husband had put away. I told her that had I kept it I would have fixed up the trailer or better yet put the money in college funds for my kids. She then counted out 2000 dollars and told me to put in the college funds for the boys. It's been great...getting a great deal (free)on an awesome 23 foot Sabre in awesome condition and doing "the right thing". Yesterday I dropped the rig off at the local trailer / welding shop for new tires, chrome wheels, axel service, new eq hitch and sway bars, new chains , etc. Next is a new AC and a complete interior cleaning and probably Pergo floor and new cushions. Upon washing the exterior, I removed the nameplates...one is cracked and broken and the other is pretty good with the exception of just being old and brittle. I first thought of backing them up by laminating 1/16th in aluminum cut to the exact shape and detailed and then painted, but when I brought one to work I asked one oth the guys here that has worked in our model shop what to do and he recommends making a silicone mold and then casting it in a urethane plastic...even a colored urethane so it doesn't have to ba painted unless it has more than one color. Mine also doesn't follow the exact contour of the trailer so that could be altered in the mold and make it follow the same curve. That's enough for today.

We have a 1964 Airstream Bambi II 17 ' . looking for information what the interior should look like. Including floor plan . Thank you.
