Silver Streak Message Board: Message Board Postings: Welcome !
By Michael DeSimas on Tuesday, September 21, 1999 - 04:59 am:

I want to welcome the visitors to this site. Most of all I need to thank Tom Patterson for allowing room in his trailer section for this board and for his creating it. The Silver Streaks, Streamlines and Airstreams are more similar then they are different. This site was created so that we could share common information and to help each other.

I have a 68 21'Silver Streak that is in very good condition. I'm getting ready to redo all of the interior wood and would like to get some advise from anyone that has done this before. The cabinets have a gold metal trim around them that is screwed into the walls. I wanted to know if I can leave the metal trim on the walls and slide out the cabinets by drilling out the rivets that hold the moulding to the cabinets? This will make it a lot easier to replace the cabinets after they have been laminated with the new veneer.
Thanks

I am considering purchasing a '68 Silverstreak Continental. I am trying to get info on it. Also how to find fair market price. It is in good shape but with some wear and tear. Is there a blue book out there?

By Doug Reynolds on Tuesday, March 28, 2000 - 07:37 pm:

As to the market value. I purchased a completely original, perfect condition, 34 foot Silver Streak Continental Supreme (Supreme Luxury Liner) in 1994. I got a smoking deal on it 6900.00 cash. This model is the top of the line for that year, and loaded. I looked at a lot of RV's and found the Silver Streak to be much better preserved. The Airstreams were quite beat up inside, and VERY over priced. I was in contact with Rolf Zushlag at the Silver Streak factory, at that time, and a new Silver Streak was going for 45 to 55 thousand, depending on how you loaded it. So I think a used one in good condition is a value from 6 to 12 thousand.

Oh OOOPPPS!! forgot to mention that the Silver Streak I purchased was a 1977 model.......

Hello folks. My Father recently passed away and I have inherited his beloved 1976 34' continental supreme. Awesome trailer, but needs a good cleaning and the aluminum polished to that gleaming shine again. I am looking for an original floorplan and a wiring diagram. Any Silver Streak clubs or other sources of tech information would be appreciated. Thanks.

Andy, do NOT!!! polish out the trailer!!!!
these were anodized aluminum. Only use a cleaner for anodized aluminum to clean it these were never bright shiny. I have two a 1967 24Ft and a 1974 32 Ft Continental Supreme with gen. and central vac. regular (almost) size right bed rear bathe with walkin closets. My 1967 is almost perfect but needs the exterior cleaned. The 67 is not a supreme but a less costly model(no Genset),
No Awning.

I just bought a 1976 SS "Supreme Rocket" and I've got a couple of questions. It looks like someone polished off all the golden color on the textured panels on the sides, back and front of the trailer. Faded? Repainted? I'm not sure, but you can still see the gold around the door frames. I like the way the gold color looks. Is it paint? I also need a new door handle/latch for the door. I am assuming this is a standard item that was used on other brands of trailers. Anyone know where I could get one? The trailer is clean enough so it can be resotred to original, (and I intend to do so). I'm missing a "V" on the back silver streak logo. Any one know a good anodized aluminum cleaner? Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott and M.........

I have a 1977 Silver Streak, and around "77", I understand that Silver Streak used a different process on the gold sections of their trailers. Unfortunately, it resulted in premature fading of the gold sections, they corrected the problem in later years. (They were never painted originally, they used an electro-plating process). This is something that really bothered me when I purchased mine. I ended up repainting everything that was gold, with gold paint. Looks wonderful now! You can check out the gold shade that you like best. I use True Value Ace "Gold Plate" it looks as close to original as I can find. The paint has stayed quite nice using no primer. But the paint does loose it's "sparkle" every so often so touching it up occasionally helps. Especially the front gravel guards and awning which take a lot of abuse. Everytime I see a Silver Streak with no gold on it, I can almost always guarantee it is a 1977 or so.

There is not much one can do with the finish, believe me I have tried everything. Anyone that tells you that anodized aluminum Silver Streaks can be made to look like new again, are nuts!! The only way any manufacture can protect a finish like this is to seal it with a clear coat. Something, Thank God, Silver Streak choose not to do. (Except in the 90's I think). This process has it's own set of problems, "ever see a peeling older Airstream"? The best one can do, is keep it clean. You can use steel wool, almost anything, and can not hurt the hard as diamond finish. But nothing will take out the streaks, and spots, at least not to my knowledge. Some people use WD-40 and transmission oil, rubbing it into the finish and then polish it out. To me this does nothing but give it a temporary "fix" that turns the whole trailer into a dust magnet and ruins any painted surfaces! I have tried this method too!

Door handle and latches can be bought at an Airstream Dealer, or large Trailer Parts supplier. Try Isley's, in Mesa AZ, they will send you a catalog of many hard to find items. I have replaced my door handle assembly, deadbolt, etc, with new.

The plastic letters on front and back do deteriorate, and unfortunately, I have not found a source for replacements. However, eventually I am going to remove mine, and have the bright red plastic lettering put on at a graphic sign shop, instead. Silver Streak Company used the decal type lettering on the Silver Streaks in different production years, for instance, 1994 and earlier as well. They look nicer and can be restored easier.

I have never seen a Silver Streak that leaned, have you checked the weight distribution etc. I am sure you have. I would think that any reputable front end alignment shop, or trailer repair place could switch out the springs for you. You might try Airstream Service, they are pretty knowledgeable about the repair of our type of trailers.

Hope this all helps you guys!

Update: I found the oven door handle for my Magic Chef RV Range.

Thought I would pass this on. I called one of our local rv dealers and the oven door handle could be ordered but, at a whopping cost of $46.64 plus shipping.

Through "Consumer Direct Sales" in Newton, Iowa I was able to purchase the same over door handle for $19.99 plus $7.63 for shipping.

If anyone is looking for Magic Chef Range Parts their phone number is: 1-877-232-6771

* I'm still searching for the plastic cover which goes on top of the Reese 41606 Lectra Jack.
Cover Part # 41628.

If anyone knows where I might find this please let me know.

Thanks again
