By karen on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 - 06:41 pm:

I recently purchased a 1978 Silver Streak Continetal Deluxe ( 30 foot ) I think I might have a broken drain pipe ?

The temperature was minus 10 and above for several days.

Drain in bathtub ( rear bath ) froze. Unfrozen now but, I think "drain" pipe is broken. Water leaking from underneath trailer ( bath tub area ) but, not sure due to metal sheeting.

The Trailer underneath is sealed and enclosed by metal sheeting & rivets.

The Bathroom Floor is dry

Where do I begin ? How do I get to the plumbing fixtures for the bathtub ?

Melissa,

This is a problem. The best recommendation I can give you is this. Contact a local RV / Travel Trailer Dealer and discuss the problem with them. they will provide you with a good starting point and references to who may be able to help with the repair. I would expect that this will be a little bit costly, however it should be above $600 or $700 for the total repair.

You can cut a square access panel directly under the shower/tub drain in the belly. All drain plumbing is ABS and available at HD or Lowes. The good news is that the drain system is not under presure so you can use rubber couplers with hose clamps to replace cracked pipes. Just cut a piece of aluminum and rivet or sheet metal screw it back in place with some sealant to close the access panel. No one will notice the patch under the belly.

The drain plug is all 1 1/4 inch ABS. There is a trap (180 degree bend) under the shower drain that goes to the grey water tank. The line then also has the vent pipe tee'd into it and the vent goes up through the back of the shower. I looked at my piping today. Yes you can cut into the belly under the shower. Make sure though that you seal it well again when you are done. Also you would need a new piece of aluminum since the old one won't be large enough and I found that the anodized is quite spendy. The pan does come off, but I don't recommend it as it is a brutal job. Or you can take the shower out, but that is brutal also and the shower won't go through the door openings.

my 22 foot 64 ss black water tank is leaking where it meets the drain pipe. When the weather warms I'm going to epoxy fiberglass it from belowe. Anywone had success with this?

Jason - There are a couple of gaskets in the sliding valve that is between the tank and the drain pipe that may have hardened/rotted. There is a Thetford rebuild kit with new gaskets. If your tank is cracked it will have to be repaired. Sections of drain pipes can be cut out and replaced with rubber couplers/hose clamps and new pipes from Home Depot. You can cut out a couple of inches of straight drain pipe and later replace with a coupler, which will give you some 'wiggle' room working with the sliding gate valve.

71- Thanks, I already had to surgically remove the old slider valve, it was alluminum with iron bolts and some pretty amazing electralisis happened. had to remove slider with a drill and a sawzall. As in my other message I ended up using butyl gutter calk. Hope this works, have not tried it out yet.

Oh yeah I should also mention that because my old flange is flat and not compatable with the new 3 inch slider valve that I took what would normally attach to the bottom of a slider and cut off the flange, flipped it over and glued it with ABS cement upside down to the tank flange to accomodate the gasket on the new sliders. Is this understandable? Wish I could draw a picture.
