Hi all We have just bought a 1968 silver streak for $1700 and would like to know if any one can tell us what those metal brackets are that fit under the springs are for? As well as what price we can expect to pay for a 3 way fridge for this unit the owner bought it 10 yrs ago and has had it standing for 4 yrs any tips before we move it?

We also need a thermostat for the heater unit we see that the hot water tank was burning black any advice on this one as well?

This is our first trailer and will be asking for a lot of help as we go along if that is ok.

This trailer seems in good condition and a steal for the price has any one any idea on what it usually goes for in good condition? Is it really nessary to get a AC unit as we plan on traveling and working around the USA for 12 mths as we travel.

Congratulations on your purchase. Regarding the fridge, you can expect to pay anywhere from 800 to over a grand for a new fridge but you might be able to get a rebuilt unit for as little as 400+. I put a new one in my 77 and paid around 900 and I did the installation. You may not need to get a 3 way. I went with a gas/110 and have been perfectly happy. I would sure reccomend AC if you are going to be traveling year around in this trailer. They do get hot... also possible a fantastic fan..they really help also.

The "metal brackets" are skids. The idea was that if you have a flat the skids will save your trailer and wheels and maybe even your tire.
I can understand that if a flat happened at night you'd know it from the shower of sparks coming out from under the trailer that you could see in your rear view mirror, but in the daytime how would one know before the skid was all ground away? Anyone ever have a flat on a skid equipped axle?

Most fridges now are 2 way - LP and 120 VAC. 3 Way (120 VAC/LP/12VDC) was popular years ago but not so much now. The 12 VDC was intended to be used only when towing as they draw so much current (15-20 Amps) that they will suck your coach battery (and starting battery, too, if you don't have an isolator) down in no time if the tow vehicle engine isn't running.

The skids seem to be a bad idea. I have a friend who lost a trailer because of them. A tire blew and the Streamline went down on the skid. The resulting sparks set the trailer on fire.

He called 911, but because of the location of the incident on a bridge, the responding fire department was not able to get there on a timely basis, and the trailer was a total loss.

Adding insult to injury was the need to have the trailer flatbedded home, in order to get it off of the bridge and highway.

Better solution is to have tire pressure monitors on each tire. That way, you will know immediately if you have a flat.
