Supreme Saturn—do the names have any significance?

Silver Streak Message Board: Message Board Postings: Supreme Saturn—do the names have any significance?

Hello all, I just bought a 1977 Supreme Saturn (or Saturn Supreme?), 30-footer. I wondered what the names mean. I imagine certain models are mid-range and others are top o' the line. Or maybe the names denote a floor plan? Mine is rear bedroom with twin beds. I've read through most of the posts here, and I haven't seen another mention of a Saturn. Can anyone tell me what it means?

I'm really excited about this great, high-quality trailer. About 20 years ago I owned and lived in a 1953 Vagabond 31-footer, with all real birch paneling, oil furnace (I used diesel) with heating ducts to every room.

It was also of similar riveted aluminum construction and top quality throughout. It had double-glazed windows in the living room, and it even had a regular bathtub—only 42" long as I remember, but I soaked in it many times.

The Vagabond even had a "back" door in the bedroom. It was a fabulous trailer, and I've often wished I'd never sold it. My "new" Silver Streak reminds me a lot of it.

I really appreciate this site. There are Airstream sites everywhere, but there doesn't seem to be much out there for Silver Streaks.

BTW, before I bought the Silver Streak, I was very seriously considering a 31-foot (as I recall) Airstream. It was a 1978 with rear bath. Neither of these trailers was supported on stands when I went in and checked them out. Each was on its wheels with only the front hitch wheel on the ground. The Airstream felt very flexible—it shook all around as I walked through it. The Silver Streak felt like it was on supports. I was amazed to find out it was not. Sure seems to me that says something about comparative quality. Also, the cabinetry in the Airstream looked sort of like an afterthought; the Silver Streak looks much more integral.

I don't have a problem with Airstreams, this is just my opinion after looking at both around the same time. Before this, I had always assumed Airstreams were the absolute best, and that nothing else came close. Well, no more.

Craig,

I don't know what the names mean either, but I just purchased a 1977 Supreme Saturn. Mine is a 28 footer with rear bath. It is in excellent condition with everything in working order.

Like you, I was considering an Airstream - something about 30 feet from the mid 1980s. I currently own a 25' Trailwind International. I looked at literally dozens of Airstreams. I found my Silver Streak sitting on consignment in a dealer lot. It was the first one I had ever seen, and due to the quality and shape, I bought it on the spot for much less than a comparable Airstream.

I can't bash the Airstream, but the SS is an all around better trailer. The SS interiors are excellent in comparison. The solid structure of the SS is another example of its superiority. If only we had all those great clubs and caravans...

Hi Everett,

Congratulations! It sounds as if you got a nice one.

Well, there goes my theory about the names being related to the floor plan. Apparently has nothing to do with length either, as my Supreme Saturn is a 30-footer.

Silver Streak vs. Airstream reminds me of the VHS-Beta video format competition where the better product also fell by the wayside.

My '79 Supreme Saturn is a "32'" (31'-3"). The "Supreme" is a package of "standard" features. I have the list of "standard" items from when the trailer was ordered.
I don't know what the non-Supreme SS's were equipped with, so I don't know what the Supremes had over the standard models. I think that the Western aluminum wheels were part of the Supreme package, maybe the shock absorbers.

I know what you mean about the SS rigidity. The only bounce in a SS is the springs and tires.

Mine is a 1977 Supreme Saturn 32ft. It's excellent but I'm getting a bathroom leak again or still, that appears to be coming from the vetical seam in the outside panel and possible around the storage compartment in the rear.

I put in a new toilet and 10 gal gas/electric SUB water heater. The cowling leaked and I vulkemed that.

Looks like another re-Vulkem seam job when it drys out around here.
