HELP! Need advice on SS tires and wheels

Silver Streak Message Board: Message Board Postings: HELP! Need advice on SS tires and wheels
By George Wehrfritz on Sunday, April 14, 2002 - 06:06 pm:

Greetings, I've purchased a 1978 SS supreme rocket in nice original condition. I want to replace the chrome rims (rusty and ugly) with either steel or alloy rims that look identical or close to "stock" for a '78 trailer. My problem: I don't know what the wheels looked like originally and the on-line brochures (Thanks, Tom) don't provide close-ups. Does anyone have a SS with "mag" wheels from the late 1970s? If so, could you post a close-up picture? Also, I would LOVE to see a shot of a late-1970s trailer with chrome rims and its original beauty rings and center cap and would be indebted to anyone who could post a picture. I want to stay as close to stock as possible, which is impossible unless I have a clear idea of what SS wheels looked like in their original state. Lastly, I would love to hear from anyone who has purchased aftermarket aluminum wheels that have a late '70s SS look. Send on brand and model ##s. Cheers, George.

My '79 has Western Wheel "mag" wheels. According to a copy of a letter from Western Wheel to Silver Streak Trailer Co., March 16, 1978, the wheels are model #10-5707 Western Dish mags. Unfortunately I have no way at present to post a photo.
Western Wheel is long gone, having been bought out and renamed several times, according to what I could find on the Net.
The owner's manual wheel photos (p. 3) show black painted steel wheels.
On p. 13 the wheels appear to be chromed steel.
