I perfer the smaller compat units to the Laptops. I had a PDA system which
worked great. It was small and very easy to use, you did have to load the
maps on to the unit. I used it during my Katrina evacuation and it paid for
itself on the return trip when we had to locate a out of the way camp
ground.

The marine systems are sometimes more expensive due to the marine use and
they have to display charts. If you are staying land based I don't think I
would go the marine system route. I also used my PDA to display charts.
