You  don't even need
gauges - just put in enough so the one line starts  to
sweat.  Mine took less than half a can which cost
under  $15.

I would not recommend filling an AC unit that way. You can get a very  
inexpensive gauge from a Kragen, or some such type place. You attache the gauge  to 
the low side and then attache the can of R-134 and slowly add freon until the  
gauge reads in the correct range. Adding too much can blow seals, even  
compressors,
