I really don't know much about vintage A/S.... but I do know OLD.  This was 
very old and did have the numbers [although very faint] painted on.  So you 
are probably right, they are from the previous owners of the numbers.  Sure 
wish the people had been around so we could have talked to them.  Well, if 
we run into them again, we'll leave a note.
