The trick is to shove the new cartridge up into the head.  Each filter
includes an integral new rubber gasket which should seal (assuming no major
corrosion or damage to the manifold.  If the new filter is not pushed far
enough into the head, the bayonet tabs will not engage with the threads in
the manifold and hence will not pull it up into the head and lock.  So not
only could it leak, but the filter element could fly off from the water
pressure and cause a flood - especially if you are hooke up to city water.
