You can buy a set of clips that are made for hanging lights on the awning.
Or, if your cheap like me, to save a few bucks I took an old metal coat hanger 
and straightened it out. Then cut into pieces about 3.5 - 4 inches long, and 
bend both ends to make a hook (I didn't make an "S" hook, more of a tight C), 
one end will slip thru the eyelets of the awning, the other end will hold the 
light wire.
I keep mine in a zip bag with the lights. Also you only need about ten of them.
