As I mentioned earlier, It all depends on the era of Bambi Cathy is
interested in. The original Bambi weighed only 1875 lbs dry and does not
require a tank to pull it safely up or down mountains. This trailer was
designed using Wally's original ideas and principals of weight reduction.
They really are a design marvel. Every decade since Wally's death has seen
the dry weights of Airstreams increase considerably. Granted, some of these
increases are due to the addition of amenities demanded by today's consumers
but much of it is due to loosing sight of the original concept. 1" thick oak
cabinet doors and resin filled presswood cabinetry, corean counters weigh a
lot. Many these items have been constructed in this manner to reduce
production costs or to add a bit more flair to the product. I suspect if
Airstream attempted to manufacture the original 16' Bambi the way it
originally was constructed and add some of the basic amenities, it would
probably cost considerably more than they are asking for the current model.
It all comes down to what you're willing to live with...........in the way
of trailer size/vintage and tow vehicle size and making sure that these
match correctly and safely.
