Early ones were noisy and many of them needed service as the capacitors 
inside them aged. Later ones are of a completely different design and use 
modern solid state regulation methods. The one in my '91 is of modern 
design. I don't know what year the design changed.

BUT - the one to have these days is the little intellipower unit with 
charge wizard. Factory sells a refurb unit at a discount. It is a smart 
unit that does things that your battery will appreciate. The AS one is not 
"smart".
