Chas,
The fabric that snaps to the bottom along the bottom of the trailer 
seems to help a lot especially if the mat and the fabric overlap. 
Sometimes we pulled the mat up tp go over the fabric.  Obviously, this 
is not real tight fitting so bugs do get in but not nearly in the 
amount they could. I also light a bug candle like citronella that seems 
to help. So far, it has never gotten so bad that we couldn't sit 
outside. I'm sure the day will come when we will get into a bug 
infested park and it might prove to be a problem. Hope this helps.
