RE: [A/S]Tundra 12V refrigerator
I researched this technology once before and was impressed. The technology
is basically the same as a modern home fridge, but it runs on 12V (120V
optional). The cost of the T80 is in the same ballpark as the comparable
Dometic RM2662 ($1400). The T-80 (largest) needs 4.5amps when the
compressor is running, but like a home unit, when the compressor is off, no
power other than that used by the electronic control unit, is consumed
(Dometic also uses 12V to run its electronic control unit). The size is
comparable, Dometic RM2662 H 54 9/16" X W 24 11/16" X D 24 7/8" Tundra T-80
H 52 1/2" X W 24 3/4" X D 24 1/4"). The compressor and condenser are
mounted at the bottom of the unit. The condenser is forced air cooled vs
convection on Dometic. The compressor and condenser set at the bottom,
inset within the overall cabinet dimensions. Ventilation requirements are
similar. Servicing of the unit would be the same as with ANY R134A
refrigerant based refrigerator (ie most any appliance repair person could
service it). The electronic control board would be the exception as that
would not be a commonly stocked unit. The unit is NOT sensitive to
operating at an angle and is designed for both Marine and RV use (so it can
withstand the jolts of traveling).
The downside of the technology is that when the compressor is running there
is some noise (like your home fridge) and when boondocking, you better make
sure that you either have adequate solar or a way to charge the batteries.
How long a given battery setup will last is dependent on battery capacity,
outside temps as well as how many times the fridge/freezer doors are opened.
This technology is something to consider if replacing or upgrading.
