Yeah?  Well, as long as you are INFORMED, the transition wouldn't be too
great a shock.

I have tracked EVERY drop of gas that has been consumed by my 2002 Chevy
Silverado 2500HD with the 8.1L big block gasser since I drove it off the new
car lot in October, 2001.  (No O.C.D. here.  No way! <g>)

After 3-1/2 years, I rarely calculate MPG but know that it hasn't changed
much.  I don't think I've ever seen a tankful do better than 11 MPG solo.
That may be because I have never taken it - solo - on a long enough highway
trip to get a good average.  My daughter, however, did in 2002.  One tankful
turned in a low 12 MPG.  That's it.  ONE tankful.  I rarely see 11 MPG solo
driving it back-and-forth to work and on other "local" trips into the big
city a couple miles away.

I honestly believe that it is simply this:  Pay upfront for the diesel
option at purchase time, and the (current) premium at the pump, or endure
GREATLY, overall reduced MPG figures driving the gas guzzler.

I know that the word "amortize" or a derivative can be applied here but I'll
leave that up to a mathematician.

In the model year of my truck (and quite likely even NOW) the short box
sports a 26-gallon fuel tank while the long box I have gets a 34-gallon
tank.

Towing at ~8 MPG, stopping more frequently for fuel with the smaller tank
would be a pain in the @$$.

I love my pickup and still don't regret that I didn't purchase a diesel.  I
am simply resigned to the fact that I enjoy a particularly expensive form of
recreation.
