I also have a 31' 1979.  My F250 is a 2004 and has the 6.0 diesel.  
Plenty of power and no problems, although the miles are still pretty 
low.

Haven't calculated the mileage when towing yet.  I just keep 
forgetting to do it.  Average mileage otherwise is 20 mpg.  People 
tell me that's good, but with today's diesel prices it's painful to 
fill up.
