If you take a look at:  http://tinyurl.com/6pn74 you will see what I use 
to access the roof(s) of my Airstream(s).  You can't see it in the 
photo, but there is a piece of carpeting to keep from scuffing the roof.

That ladder is a 12 footer (4x3 rungs).  I have a piece of plywood cut 
to fit on the horizontal section for when I need a tool shelf.  You can 
walk on the ribs (I take off my shoes, but if your sneakers are good and 
clean they won't scratch).  Land the ladder as close to the ribs as you can.
