    You do not need 4WD just to tow your Airstream. It's a matter of personal 
preference. Are there advantages to towing with a 4WD vehicle? Yes, but then 
again, that depends on where you want to go. 
    Here are a few of my thoughts to advantage of 4WD versus 2WD.
4 Wheel Drive: 
    1)     Additional weight up front to help provide better steering even 
with weight distribution bars
    2)    Makes getting in/out of wet soggy/muddy campgrounds easier.
    3)    Backing up in gravel/dirt campsites, 4WD makes it easier.
    4)    A lot better traction in snow
    5)    If your friends get stuck you already have a tow truck.

    I'm sure others could add to this but it's just a few things with out 
covering each every occasion that you would benefit from having 4WD. Like I 
said it's a matter of preference, but if you have a chance to drive both for 
comparisons, you'll like the 4WD better. Also consider places you'd like to 
go. We live in south Georgia, so we visit sandy beach campgrounds in Florida, 
and go snow chasing in the winter. Two years ago at Enota Mountain Retreat, we 
where able to leave when we wanted but  others with 2WD vehicles could not get 
up the hill to leave. Not that an extra day or two would have been bad, but 
our kids had to be back in time for school.
    As for gas mileage: Our Suburban 4X4 averages 11.3 MPG from Valdosta, GA 
to Helen GA towing a 29 foot Airstream Ambassador.
