[A/S] Re: Gear Vendor or US Gear

I know it sounds awfully nosy, but are you getting it because you feel
you need it to tow the Airstream, or because you just want it???

I went through a period of looking at the catalogs, and trying to
figure the mileage gain per gallon and I finally came to the
conclusion that even if the savings were flat according to the gear
ratio change, I would have to drive it about 70,000 miles to save
enough gas to pay for the "dual speed" rear end...I know it is a way
to get another shift that can be either between gears for additional
power and as an "overdrive" to get a taller rear end...Usually, the
trucks we are using have enough power without adding gears to pull a
fully loaded airstream...

If you are adding it to a fairly new truck, I would re-calculate the
benefits several times before dropping the cash...If you are adding it
to an older truck to get the pulling power up to adequate, I would
probably put the 2K+ in a bigger truck....

All that said, I am a great believer in buying things because you want
them and if not now, when???

Keep us posted on the realized benefits when and if you do the deed...

Best regards,

Jim
