David,

The tires on my Safari are rated at 2040 lbs at 65 psi, this equals 8160 
for all four tires on a trailer with a gross weight of 5800 lbs, and 
axles which are rated at 5800 lbs.  Airstream recommends 36 psi and that 
is what I run.  If you have to put max pressure in the tires to carry 
the load you need bigger tires.

Metal stems, however are a good idea, they came on my PowerWagon in 1973 
and when I had the wheels powdercoated I put on metal stems, they also 
look better on white wheels.
