I drove my VW Jetta, TDI which is diesel fueled, Ontario to Galveston and
back. No problem getting diesel anywhere along the interstates. All Flying
J's have it and if you pay cash, you get a considerable discount. Also go on
their web site and get their RV Card and get a further discount.
On the two laners, what Hunter says is exactly correct, don't let your tank
bottom out and usually you find a service station that also has diesel.
I would be most cautious about buying from independents. Sometimes their
fuel is not that clean and if they don't do a large volume of business, it
may have been sitting around and picked up water. The VW has a filter to
take the water out of the fuel, I'm not sure what the Sprinter's technology
is in this respect.
Diesel in the US has been de-sulpherized and so I always add the diesel
additive you get at Flying J. It is supposed to cut down on engine wear and
give better milage. In Canada I don't use the additive as they still have
the sulpher in the diesel fuel.
I am a big fan of the diesel engine. My Jetta gets phenominal milage (50-60
mpg highway). I'm not sure how that translates in the Sprinter. I have had
no engine problems and "she go like stink".
