         I thought you had PocketMail...It's not so expensive, and works 
from any telephone.  IIRC, the service is about $150/year, if you go for a 
year at a time; you can go for less than a year, if you choose.  At 
startup, you would have to get a device.  In my case, I already had a Palm 
Pilot, and someone had a special on - buy a year of service, get the Palm 
add-on device free.  Look at PocketMail.com, or just put PocketMail into 
Google to see re-sellers (many of whom sell the service for less than 
PocketMail, Inc, does).
         The downside:  if you have lots of email, it takes a while at the 
phone (at least if you use the Palm device) - it's not fast, but it's 
relatively cheap and generally works from any phone; there is a different 
number for pay phones in US and Canada.
