You can get by with just one battery if you are on shore power most of the 
time. The battery has to be functional and working correctly.
One caution however, because the wiring for the batteries is in parallel the 
leads for the missing battery will be hot. Be sure you insulate the ends to 
keep them from contacting each other or any other ground.
