Dave:
Perhaps you can avoid the problem by backing onto your driveway from 
the side.   If you share a common driveway with your neighbour and 
can back in askew and thus have only one wheel cross the curb at the 
time you will reduce the amount of clearance that you need. 
    If you don't share a driveway try catching just the corner of 
your driveway with one wheel.
   I try to back in askew when ever I can. 

I saw a trailer once where the guy had tried caster wheels but said 
that they just kept breaking.  He had a pipe roller installed  from 
one  frame rail to the other.
