[A/S] Univolt problem

I have been following your electrical problem reports but it didn't
"click in" for me until tonight.  About 15 years age I had a very
similar problem with the Univolt in my '74 27' Overlander A/S.

The dc would go off for no apparent reason and the next day
it would be back on until I put a heavy load on it.  After much
trouble shooting I became convinced the problem was in the
Univolt.  I removed it from the trailer and drilled out several
rivets to gain access to the guts of the little monster.  I then
found a crack in the phenolic board that the fuse blocks were
mounted on.  A little JB Weld and carful reassembly and it worked
like new.  It was still working fine 4 years latter when I sold it to
buy an '85 25' Sovereign A/S.

The Univolt is an old design, sort of like a magnetic amplifier.
It's very rugged and durable and will last many years if
you blow the dust out of it once in a blue moon and make
sure it gets a little air circulation.

I love my new 2,000 watt inverter / 100 amp charger but I
don't expect it will be working 30 years from now!
