You must be talking about the check digit. It is a process to work it 
out. the only time you would worry is if you were buying a used unit 
from a private individual. The purpose of the check digit is to prevent 
tampering with the VIN, as in a stolen vehicle, or to represent it as 
something other that what it is.

I have always liked to be able to interpret VIN's, it keeps people 
honest when your dealing on a used vehicle.
