The reason why you lost your local stations on the
road is that Dish has moved many of the local stations
to spot beam transmitters.  This allows them to focus
the local stations over what Dish considers their
normal geographic coverage areas.  It gives them more
capacity for additional transmissions on their
satellites.  Without the spot beam technology, Dish
would not have the capacity to handle as many local
channels as they do today.  The days of getting your
local stations in what ever part of the country you
traveling in will dwindle as time goes on.  I'm not
sure if Direct is using this technology yet but its
just a matter of time.
