[A/S] Re: Jeep pulling Airstream
Greetings Bill!
I agree! The 1984-1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with either the 390 or
401 V8 makes a wonderful tow vehicle, and especially so when it has
the factory tow package with 3.90 differential gearing, but I would
not suggest it for any Airstream larger than the Overlander. The 360
V8 was adequate in comparison to the anemic 350 V8 in my 1995 K1500 Z-
71 Chevrolet pickup that I had that couldn't get out of its own way
when towing the Overlander(despite having the correct factory towing
package for the Overlander).
I always longed for the 401 V8 in my '84 Grand Wagoneer that was my
first tow vehicle for the Overlander - - the 360 was adequate and a
powerhouse in comparison to the 350 V8 in my '95 Chevrolet. The Jeep
Grand Wagoneer served me well for 189,000 miles with very limited
trouble outher than running out of gas on more ocassions than I care
to remember - - its maximum crusing range solo was 180 miles and I
don't even like to think about the cruising range with the Overlander.
The unfortunate thing is that none of the new Jeep products since the
Chrysler acquisition have approached the towing capabilities of the
old AMC Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
