First!  Stop using the furnace....
It can be pulled out and serviced/repaired fairly easily. you can determine 
if it is
cost effictive to repair/ replace....
With my '72  I knew that the furnace in mine sat for so many years without 
any use;
and that it would have some life  left. First time it was pulled and cleaned 
  a small gas
leak was dected and repaired. The tec indicated he put five hours in it.
The following year the fan motor seized... so out it came again another 
motor installed
and no problems since.
I must say i agree on the  carbon monoxide dector. We don't want to loose ya 
for a
measley $50 dector.  I installed one and check it often as I use the furnace 
every
weekend in the winter months
