John, we tried a Shark hand held and liked it ability to pick up "stuff" from 
the floor, but it had to be operated in an awkward position.  We switched to 
a Shark upright vacuum.  It is small, but operates similar to any upright 
vacuum.  It is small, light weight, and does a great job, {or at least that is 
what my wife says ;-) }.
